Police in riot gear early Thursday morning shutdown a Pro-Palestinian encampment at Wayne State University in Midtown Detroit and arrested several protesters, the school announced.

WSU President Kimberly Andrews Espy said in a statment that "after many good-faith efforts to reach a different conclusion -- this was the right time to take this necessary step."

"Since the encampment was established on May 23, it presented legal, health and safety, operational challenges for our community. University leadership repeatedly engaged with occupants of the encampment."

The university said starting around 5:30 a.m. Wayne State University police officers made repeated announcements for people to gather their belongings and leave. Many people did leave on their own, the school said.
