Bird Flu Spreads in Michigan, Expected to Impact Egg Supply and Prices

An egg shortage is on the horizon in Michigan. And that likely means higher prices.

Michigan is experiencing a serious outbreak of bird flu. So far, more than 6.5 million of the state's 15 million egg-laying hen population has been decimated, Crain's Detroit Business reports. The deadly virus is transmitted by wild migratory birds. 

Ernie Birchmeier, the livestock and dairy specialist for the Michigan Farm Bureau, tells Crain's he expects egg prices to grow as hens in Michigan and elsewhere get infected.

There have been outbreaks in other states like Minnesota, New Mexico and Texas, but not nearly as severe as in Michigan.
